Wireguard: Installation on Android

This article describes how to install Wireguard on Android devices. Please note that the menus may look slightly different depending on the manufacturer and / or launcher.

Step 1: Installation of the VPN Client

Open the Google Play Store (search for Wireguard) and click Install. The client will now be installed on your device.

Note: You can also install Wireguard via F-Droid if you do not want to use the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Create VPN configuration

Go to https://www.rhrk.uni-kl.de/vpnwg/ and log in with your RHRZ account (without @rhrk.uni-kl.de).

Note: If you would like to install the configuration via QR code on your device, please follow the steps to create the configuration on another device.

You will now get to the profile overview.

In the drop-down menu, select whether you want to create a profile for a split tunnel or a full tunnel. For more information on the advantages and disadvantages of the selection, see Available tunnel types. Enter a suitable name for the profile in the field below and then click on create.

A popup opens to scan the QR code or download the configuration.

If you want to install the configuration via QR code, go straight to the next step.

If you install the configuration manually, please click here on Download Config. (Important! Treat the downloaded profile like a password and never give it to anyone!)

Step 3: Import the configuration

Now open your Wireguard client.

Now click on the plus symbol at the bottom right. You now have 2 options for installing the configuration:

  • If you would like to install the configuration via QR code, click on Scan from QR code and scan the QR code generated when creating the configuration. The note "wgtuk - ***"imported appears in your client. The installation is now complete.
  • If you would like to install the configuration using a configuration file, click on Import from file or archive. Your file browser opens. Now select the downloaded file (name wgtuk - ***. Conf). Now give the configuration a name (maximum 15 characters) and click on Create tunnel. The tunnel has now been created.

Step 4: start VPN

The profile that has just been installed is now displayed in the client. To start the tunnel click on the slider behind your profile. Confirm the subsequent connection request by clicking OK.

You can now see from the lock symbol in the top bar that the VPN is active.

Step 5: stop VPN

To end the VPN tunnel, click the slider behind your profile again. The lock symbol disappears and the VPN tunnel is closed.
