Wireguard - Installation on Windows

This article describes how to install Wireguard on Microsoft Windows.

Important: You need administrator rights on your computer to use Wireguard.

Step 1: create VPN configuration

Go to https://www.rhrk.uni-kl.de/vpnwg/ and log in with your RHRK account (without @rhrk.uni-kl.de).

You will now get to the profile overview.

In the drop-down menu on the left, choose whether you want to create a profile for a split tunnel or a full tunnel. For more information on the advantages and disadvantages of the selection, see Available tunnel types. Enter a suitable name for the profile in the field below and then click on create.

A popup for downloading the configuration opens.

Please click here on Download Config and note the location where the profile was saved (Important! Treat the downloaded profile like a password and never pass it on!)

Step 2: Installation of the VPN client

Open the website https://www.wireguard.com/install/ and download the Windows Installer from here.

Open the file and confirm the user account control prompt with Yes.

Then start the Wireguard Client.

Note: Available Updates are regularly displayed in your client int the tab An Update is available. Always keep your client up to date by clicking Update Now!

Step 3: Import the configuration

The configuration file that has just been downloaded must now be integrated using the Import tunnel from file button.

Select the configuration file in the file window and click on Open.

Step 4: start VPN

The profile that has just been installed is now displayed in the Tunnel tab in the Wireguard Client. To start the tunnel click Activate. A brief message from the Windows notification system shows you that the tunnel has started. You can also check at any time in the task bar whether the tunnel is activated (when the tunnel is activated, a green tick is displayed on the Wireguard symbol).

Step 5: stop VPN

To end the VPN tunnel click on the Wireguard symbol in the system tray and then click on Deactivate. Here, too, there is a brief response from the Windows notification system that the tunnel has been deactivated.
